The motherboard is the foundation of any PC. It is the main circuit board in a personal computer that controls the transfer of information between various devices within a machine Motherboards range in size, color, and capabilities but the principles of motherboards remain the same. The motherboard is used to control all interactions of devices within the system. Discrete components, slot connectors, DIP sockets, ZIF sockets, SIMM and DIMM sockets are all soldered directly onboard. Many newer motherboards have certain devices integrated onboard such as video adapters and sound cards. Onboard devices are a good way of freeing up valuable expansion slots, but require additional chipsets to function properly. These chipsets are typically soldered onboard. For example, if a motherboard had an onboard video adapter and sound card, separate chipsets would be required to control the behavior of these two devices. Other peripheral devices such as network cards and hard disk controllers are typically separate expansion boards that plug into sockets on a motherboard.

Without a doubt, the most important component in a PC system is the main board or motherboard. Virtually every internal component in a PC connects to the motherboard, and its features largely determine what your computer is capable of, not to mention its overall performance. Although I prefer the term motherboard, other terms such as main board, system board, and planar are interchangeable. This section examines the various types of motherboards available and those components typically contained on the motherboard and motherboard interface connectors.
